POSITION TITLE:  Math Instructional Specialist (IS)

REPORTS TO:  Director of Curriculum

JOB OBJECTIVE: The Math Instructional Specialist serves as part of Eagle Rock’s instructional team.  The position is responsible for students’ development of math reasoning and skills, both through designing and implementing innovative curriculum and through extracurricular math opportunities.

QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelors or Masters degree in Mathematics, Math Education, or related field; teaching experience, preferably in progressive models; strong organizational and leadership skills; ability to work collaboratively both in the classroom and out with other staff; experience working with diverse adolescents including a mix of LGBTQ students, students from low income backgrounds, and students from diverse racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds, all of whom have not found success in traditional educational settings; teaching license not required.

The successful candidate for this position will possess the following attributes: a deep love of work with high school students; knowledge of effective practices in math education; demonstrated success in collaborative work with colleagues; adept interpersonal skills; a sense of humor; visionary thinking; a commitment to lifelong learning; seasoned judgment; and an appreciation for the fact that working at a residential school is more of a calling than a job.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Curriculum:

  • Shepherd a vision for math education at Eagle Rock that meets students where they are, regardless of previous gaps in their math education, and prepares them to succeed in college, career, and community
  • Teach math courses that are experiential and engaging to students; courses are heterogeneously grouped and rely on group learning with a paradigm of a growth mindset and using mathematical reasoning; courses are organized around enduring understandings and are not lined up with a linear scope and sequence; there is an opportunity to develop your own curriculum
  • Collaborate with other instructors to co-design and co-teach classes
  • Provide extracurricular opportunities for students to develop their math reasoning and skills
  • Manage department resources; develop and maintain department budget

Student Support

  • Serve as an advisor to a small group of students, supporting their academic and personal growth
  • Support adolescents as they are confronted with a variety of issues related to their personal and academic growth
  • Create outside-of-class opportunities for students to participate in activities that excite and empower them
  • Participate in internal professional development to better support students

School Wide Involvement

  • Participate as an active member of one of the residential house teams
  • Co-create and deliver engaging student programming opportunities as part of an evening program team. Regularly work one night a week on this team and with students
  • Perform other duties related to being an active community member at ERS including advisories, intramural participation, community meetings, service projects, house team participation, driving, and other events
  • Share your unique skills with the school (e.g., sports, spiritual practices, poetry, yoga, hiking, magic tricks, etc…)
  • Be an active member of the ERS community beyond this job description.
