At Eagle Rock, our teachers work together to develop empowering, relevant learning experiences for our students, setting them up for success in college, career, and their communities.  Many of our students have academic challenges based in learning differences or inadequate prior schooling, and we want to equip them with all the skills they need for future success. We’ll be honest; Eagle Rock isn’t for everybody.  If you believe students need to be “taught lessons,” that pull-out remediation is the best way to serve students, or that learning is limited to the traditional school day; then this school is not for you.  If you are looking for a job rather than a lifestyle, you won’t fit here. POSITION TITLE:  Learning Specialist

REPORTS TO:  Director of Curriculum

JOB OBJECTIVE: The Learning Specialist serves as part of Eagle Rock’s instructional team.  The position is responsible for serving students with learning needs through managing plans, direct tutoring and instruction, and coaching other instructors.  

QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelors or Masters degree in Special Education or related field; experience, preferably in progressive models, in a thriving Learning Specialist program and/or experience building such a program; strong organizational and leadership skills; ability to work collaboratively both in the classroom and out with other staff; experience working with diverse adolescents including a mix of LGBTQ students, students from low income backgrounds, and students from diverse racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds, all of whom have not found success in traditional educational settings; teaching license not required.

The successful candidate for this position will possess the following attributes: a deep love of work with high school students; knowledge of effective practices in serving students with learning differences; demonstrated success in collaborative work with colleagues; adept interpersonal skills; a sense of humor; visionary thinking; a commitment to lifelong learning; seasoned judgment; and an appreciation for the fact that working at a residential school is more of a calling than a job.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Student Support

  • Admissions Evaluation
    • Evaluate academic records and IEPs and 504s to ascertain whether Eagle Rock can serve applicants
  • Manage IEPs and 504s
    • Be sure we have updated IEPs and 504s for eligible students
    • Facilitate testing as needed
  • Manage learning profiles for all students
    • Maintain updated learning profiles for all students, integrated with our case management system
    • Provide a snapshot of learning profiles to teachers before class
  • Support students in leveraging strengths to overcome challenges:
    • Meet one-on-one with students to create success strategies
    • Provide one-on-one or small group tutoring/study sessions as needed
  • Support teachers to provide appropriate interventions and instructional strategies
    • Consult with teachers to support student success in classes
    • Observe classrooms and provide feedback to improve differentiation and interventions
  • Teaching
    • Teach one course per trimester, focused on foundational skills (literacy, numeracy, and study/organizational skills)
  • Testing and Data Analysis
    • Facilitate testing:  College and Work Readiness Assessment (CWRA) and Measures of Academic Progress (MAP)
    • Collect and analyze results for student body as a whole
    • Use student body scores to recommend instructional strategies and interventions
    • Use individual student results to update learning profiles/academic plans/CMT
  • Post-Secondary Planning
    • Work with our School Counselor to ensure all students with IEPs and 504s have post-secondary plans
    • Maintain IEPs and 504s to send to colleges
  • Serve as an advisor to a small group of students, supporting their academic and personal growth

School Wide Involvement

  • Participate as an active member of one of the residential house teams
  • Co-create and deliver engaging student programming opportunities as part of an evening program team. Regularly work one night a week on this team and with students
  • Perform other duties related to being an active community member at ERS including advisories, intramural participation, community meetings, service projects, house team participation, driving, and other events
  • Share your unique skills with the school (e.g., sports, spiritual practices, poetry, yoga, hiking, magic tricks, etc…)
  • Be an active member of the ERS community beyond this job description.
